Project Garden Fish

Project Garden Fish aims to assess the fish and mobile invertebrates (eg. crabs and shrimp) living on and around clam gardens.  These impressive inter-tidal structures are very long-standing anthropogenic habitat modifications, which provide an excellent opportunity to research their effects on biodiversity and ecosystem function. The Project Garden Fish team is using Fyke nets, minnow traps, GoPro footage and potentially snorkel and scuba surveys to collect data on what species are present at a number of clam garden sites and unmodified beaches.  A suite of beach and environmental characteristics are being collected concurrently. To date, twelve different beaches on northern Quadra Island have been surveyed.  A small pilot study to assess methods was also conducted on Calvert Island.  An excellent start to an interesting project.Research
