In 2013 and 2014, we conducted a series of interviews with 16 Heiltsuk knowledge holders to learn about traditional ecological knowledge regarding the management of clam resources and ecosystems in the past and the present, the cultural importance of clam digging, and the social connections and relationships maintained and strengthened through shellfish harvesting. People shared information on specific harvesting locations, when and how clams were harvested, prepared and stored, how to keep beaches healthy and productive, the importance of clam digging to traditional and recent economics and culture, and observations about changes in clam ecology. Walas Giaxsixa to all involved.
